APRIL 30th SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING

  • Appointed Mathew Walters, MCP, BCO of Barry Isett & Associates as Alternate Building Code Enforcement Officer.
  • Appointed Borough Manager Robin Zmoda as Temporary Assistant Zoning Officer

 

MAY 7th COUNCIL MEETING

Pen Argyl Borough presented Officer Steven Horvath with a citation recognizing his heroic, dedicated, self initiated actions during Hurricane Sandy which included checking on the Borough’s elderly and infirmed.  At one such residence Officer Horvath rescued a citizen who had fallen and needed medical care, essentially saving their life. When you see Officer Horvath thank him for his dedication to this Borough and its residents.

  • Tentatively awarded Railroad Avenue Phase one project to A. Scott Enterprises pending legal and engineering reviews.
  • Awarded Wastewater Treatment Plant Valve Actuator Replacement project to Barry J. Hoffman Co., Inc.
  • Agreed to table reed bed bid awards until June meeting.
  • Approved ICS’ request to close N. Heller Avenue from W.  Babbitt Avenue to W.  Bell Avenue on May 16th for their Mayfair.
  • Approved Faith United Presbyterian Church’s request to close S. Heller Avenue on June 15th for their annual Strawberry Festival.

 

PUBLIC WORKS

            During the month of April the Public Works Department performed scheduled maintenance tasks and completed all requested tasks.   

  • Equipment maintenance
  • Prep park for spring
  • Maintained traffic lights and sign maintenance
  • Debris removal from basins, wash outs and trough drains.
  • Pot hole and litter patrol

 

ZONING/CODE DEPARTMENT

            In April, the following permits were issued:  4 building, 1 electrical, 3 electrical inspections and 2 sidewalk.  Also completed; 7 rental property licensing registrations, 11 rental inspections, 1 re-sale inspection, 3 residential occupancy permits, 1 commercial re-sale inspection, 2 yard sale permits and 1 zoning hearing application.  Landlords are reminded to contact the Zoning Officer to register rental properties and to schedule inspection of rental properties to comply with the Licensing of Rental Properties Ordinance. POLICE DEPARTMENT

            In April, the Borough Police had 273 calls for service which resulted in 27 cases.  There were 5 criminal incidents, 49 citations and 10 individuals were arrested.  The Department participated in 17 mutual aid calls.

 

LOOKOUT FIRE COMPANY

During the month of April, Lookout Fire Company responded to 8 calls.  They spent 206 hours on calls and logged an additional 196 hours on drills.Lookout Fire Company has a website: www.lookoutfireco.com .   The site offers a newsletter sign-up, event listings and safety tips.

 

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

            The WWTP is fully compliant with all regulations.  During April, the staff did routine maintenance on equipment, plant and pumping stations.  Began to prepare for Reed Bed 5 & 6 for cleaning.  Emergency service to line on Nottle Avenue.

            The Borough Newsletter is published each month following the Borough Council Meeting.  It can be found at the Borough Hall, Blue Mt. Community Library, PNC Bank, the Post Office, On the Spot Cleaners, Marcon Shoemaker, Between the Bread, Cuono’s Barber Shop, Reto’s Barber Shop, Pen Argyl Pizza, Slate Pub, Father & Son Mattress Store, Low Tagg and PA Bagel & Deli.  It can also be found on our website: www.penargylborough.com You can receive the newsletter online by going to our website and requesting it. PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING PEN ARGYL, WIND GAP AND PLAINFIELD TWP REGIONAL POLICE STUDY.  MAY 29, 2013 AT 7 P.M. IN THE PLAINFIELD TWP VOLUNTEER FIRE CO. HALL

 

2013-2014 Garbage bills were mailed out to residents on April 1, 2013; if you did not receive your bill please contact Borough Hall at 610-863-4119 to get a copy. 

Free Yard Sale Weekend- June 7th through June 9th

Garbage/Recycling –Garbage collection is every Friday.  Recycling will be on May 3rd & 17th   as well as June 1st, 14th & 28th. Note that due to the Memorial Day Holiday collection & recycling will be on Saturday, June 1st . Garbage/recycling containers are to be placed on the resident’s property at the curb line and are not to be placed before 2 P.M. on the day before pickup.

Park hours– All sections of the park are now closed at dusk.

Dog LicensesResidents are reminded to renew their dog licenses.  Licenses can be purchased at AVH Veterinary Group, 1027 Blue Valley Drive.    Please call Animal Control Officer Phil Bell at the non-emergency number at the Control Center 610-759-2200 or Mr. Bell’s cell number at 610-393-0223.

Blue Mountain Community Library- Nancy Chuss’ therapy dog is coming to the library on May 8th and 9th !  Children may read a story to Quincy. Library Fundraiser Dine at Detzi’s, Monday, May 13th from 4-9 P.M.,  Detzi’s will donate 10% of its earnings during that time period to the BMCL.  Book Discussion Group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 P.M., May 21st Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali (nonfiction); June 18th  – Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda (fiction).   Board of Directors will meet May 15th  at 6:30 PM.

WEONA PARK   2013 SUMMER EVENT SCHEDULE

 

SUMMER SOUNDS CONCERTS

On five (5) Sunday evenings, free concerts will be held at the Park’s Band Shell. Hot dogs, soda, coffee and homemade pies will be for sale. Concerts begin at 6:00 P.M.

  • July 7th      Easton Municipal Band
  • July 21st    Riverside Rhythms – Big Band Sound    
  • Aug. 4th     Inch & The Echoes
  • Aug. 18th   Nazareth Municipal Band

These programs are funded by Pen Argyl Borough, Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association, PA Partners in the Arts.    State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by PA’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.  PPA is administered in this region by the Lehigh Valley Arts Council.

 

 

SWIMMING LESSONS

The Slate Belt YMCA Learn to Swim Program will begin the week of June 24th.   Sessions will be 2 weeks

(8 classes total):  Monday – Thursday (Friday will be used as a make-up).  Programs offered will be: Pike- Beginner for Ages 3-5 years; Eel- Adv. Beginner for Ages 3-5 years; Polliwog- Beginner for Ages 6 and up; Guppy- Adv. Beginner for Ages 6 and up.  Cost is $35.00 for Pen Argyl Area School District residents all others pay $67.00.  Sign-ups begin Saturday, May 25th at Community Center from 10  A.M. to Noon.  Proof of residency required.

 

RECREATION

To be announced.  Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Board is discussing details with the Slate Belt YMCA.  Please check website for further details closer to the summer season.

 

CAROUSEL & MINIATURE GOLF

Beginning Saturday, May 25th, our historic carousel and miniature golf course will be open Friday evenings           6-9 P.M; Saturday and Sundays 12 Noon – 9 P.M., weather permitting.  Carousel Rides are $1 and Golf costs $4.

 

SWIMMING PASSES

Discount passes will be sold at the Community Center on Saturday, May 25th, from 10 A.M. – 12 Noon. 

  • For Borough residents, a single pass will be $70 (discounted pass $65); family passes will be $150 for a limit of 4 family members, additional family members will be $25/person (discounted pass $140 plus additional $25/person); resident senior pass will be $30. Proof of residency required.
  • Passes for nonresidents will be $125 for single (discounted pass $120) and $225 for family of 4 members and $25 for each additional family member (discounted pass $215 plus additional $25/person).
  • Daily:  $3/children and $5/adult

Tentative opening:  Saturday, June 8th

 

WEONAPARK

Weona Park is operated by the Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association, a nonprofit 501 C (3) organization.  The Association meets the third (3rd) Tuesday of each month at 7:00 P.M. at the Community Center.

Tax deductible contributions to support any program of the park may be made to Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association and sent to P.O. Box 335, Pen Argyl, PA  18072. The Community Center and the Pavilions near the play area are available to rent for activities.  Contact the park office for more information.
